Job search is NOT one-size-fits-all.

What I mean is that a single version of you does not fit every job that you apply for. Whenever you can, present the version of you that best fits the job opportunity.

To do this, first you need to identify what the hiring company is looking for by carefully thinking about the company and the job opportunity. What characteristics are likely to make an applicant particularly attractive to this company? Think about skills, experiences, interests, and accomplishments that may be relevant to the job you’re pursuing and what you know about the company. You may have to dig for some of this information, but it’s worth it.

Once you’ve identified these characteristics, carefully consider what you have to offer that makes you an appropriate, and hopefully the best, applicant. Take these characteristics that you have to offer and describe them in the form of personal accomplishments and achievements. With this information in hand, you can now customize your personal marketing effort for this job, presenting the version of you that best matches what the hiring company is looking for.

Customizing includes revising your resume to highlight your achievements, skills, and other characteristics that are highly relevant to this job; preparing a cover letter that demonstrates your interest in and ability to perform this job; and preparing to demonstrate the same things in a personal interview.

Job search is more competitive than ever before. Most jobs have many applicants and employers have the luxury of choosing the very best. A generic version of you is not likely to be the most attractive applicant. For success, you need to customize your personal marketing efforts to each job that you pursue.

If you’re a job seeker, you’re in “sales”. What you’re selling is you, hopefully to some employer who has a job available.

To be an effective salesperson you need to understand your buyer. You need to think like the employer you’re trying to sell to. This will allow you to understand what the employer wants, so you can present yourself as the right solution.

To start with, you need to recognize that employers don’t want to increase their payrolls with more employees. Employees are expensive. Employees also add complexity to the workplace. Employees have needs. They have their own goals and agendas, and their own problems and limitations. None of this is helpful or attractive to the employer.

Employers add new employees only out of necessity – when some sort of work absolutely has to be done, which can’t be done by the existing employees, and can’t be taken care of in some other way (such as with technology, or outsourcing, or some other solution).

In other words, employers would rather not hire you. Employers hire as the last option because they have a situation that can’t be fixed in any other way. And they fear that a new employee may bring more costs and trouble than he or she is worth.

What does this mean to you in your job search? It’s not about you! It’s about a job that the employer needs to have done. If you can’t completely take care of this job, you’re irrelevant to the employer – unless you’ve already been hired, in which case you’re an expense that needs to be eliminated.

This may sound ruthless, and it is. The faster you know this the quicker you can prepare yourself correctly for the job opportunity.

Preparing yourself correctly involves learning and thinking about the job the hiring employer needs performed. Then it’s about presenting yourself as the best solution for that need. It’s about the employer’s needs, and not about you.

You have to tell the employer you can take care of the employer’s needs, and prove that your promise is credible – that you can and will deliver the goods.

Well, some of us remember the days (before the Internet) when it was hard to find out about lots of the available jobs. Unfortunately, that’s a trend that’s been reappearing lately. With so many applicants applying for every job, companies literally can’t handle the volume of response. To avoid overwhelming numbers of applicants, companies are looking internally for recommendations and referrals. And they’re having placement services discreetly send them potential candidates without a public posting.

Is this fair? And whether it’s fair or not, how can you get a chance at these jobs?

The answer is that it’s just a matter of playing the game, and using whatever advantages you may have. First, put all your networking resources and family to work for you. Remind everyone on a frequent basis that you’re looking for a new job. This way, your name has a greater chance of coming up when hiring companies use their own networks to find quality applicants.

Also, sign up with several placement services. And, don’t just fax in your resume, but actually go into their offices whenever possible and complete their entire testing and application process. If you can’t go physically, call and get all the information emailed to you, complete it, and return it. This will move you ahead of the people who only apply for the jobs they see posted with these agencies. You want all of these placement services to be familiar with you, and have all your pertinent information available, whenever they have jobs available, whether posted or not.

Email and talk to HR reps and managers at companies that you want to work with. Again, build these relationships and complete any preliminary testing and processing. You want to be on the internal applicant list whenever a job opportunity becomes available, whether it’s advertised or not.

Use all your resources to let the appropriate people know that you’re interested, able, and available for work! Remember that the easier you can make the hiring process for the company and the HR rep, the more likely you’ll be noticed and given an opportunity.

If you’ve been thrust back into the job market in the past 6-12 months, then you already realize how different and challenging the job search process has become. I learned this fact about 6 months ago when I started applying for jobs with 2 purposes in mind. One purpose was simply to see what opportunities were available, and the other purpose was to try to pick up some secondary income.

I quickly learned that my old resume, which I simply updated with my last job, didn’t get much notice. I circulated this resume everywhere and got nearly no response. At first I wondered what I was doing wrong. What I came to realize is that I had a boring, “just-the-facts” resume, and I had no idea how to get my resume and me noticed in a very crowded market. Don’t get me wrong — I knew how to upload my resume to all the right job search engines, and I knew where to find job openings, but there was a lot more that I was missing.

So I started researching and consulting with experts, and followed that up with a little creativity and persistence. I picked up a few neat tricks, and with a little help I developed a step-by-step approach for my job search. Within 2 weeks after starting this new approach I went from no interviews to 10 interviews, and I eventually had 8 job offers to pick from. This is a true story and it happened in this economy!

Because today’s job market is much more difficult than in the past, a top quality search process is needed to get interviews and jobs. But like me when I started my search, most job seekers don’t know what they need do to be noticed and valued by hiring companies.

When I shared my surprising job search success with another professional, we decided to help other job seekers by providing them the guidance and advice they need to get new and better jobs in this difficult market. After months of intense research, development, consulting, and other efforts, a nearly foolproof method for pursuing new and better jobs was created in www.findanewjobfast.com.

With so many people now unemployed, competition for the available jobs has has increased tremendously. Employers are having their pick from among many qualified candidates and increasing the requirements for many positions. Because the of the extremely large and talented job pool, employers are able to search for the perfect candidate.

I recently spoke with a real estate company Vice-President who was interviewing for a new office manager. In the past, she had found it difficult to locate good candidates for this position. However, when she recently advertised the position on Craigslist, she was flooded with hundreds of resumes within a week. She received so many resumes that she had to have HR perform an initial screening, which she never had done before. And she was shocked by what she called the number of “over qualified” people who applied for the position. (By the way, I believe there’s no such thing as over qualified, just candidates with abilities in addition to what’s required for the advertised job.)

Once the resumes was reviewed, the VP found several great candidates with past experience relevant to the job, adequate education, and good references. The company hired a young woman who interviewed well and received a glowing recommendation from her previous employer.

The candidate that was hired embodied the principles that we teach to the subscribers of findanewjobfast.com. We help our subscribers become the standout candidates with a great chances of being hired. Using our step-by-step approach, our subscribers are able to move ahead of the competition and get more interviews, more offers, and better jobs.

In today’s job market, you need to know how to get a job, not just perform it. If you can’t sell yourself, it doesn’t matter how many other abilities you have. Let us provide you everything you need to succeed in your job search, at an economical price. Check us out at www.findanewjobfast.com and join the Revolution!
